About Bill Emerson, Sr.


Bill Emerson, Sr. is a lifelong resident of "The Region" and has lived in Hammond for 30 years. 

Bill and Jeanne have been married for 34 years and they have two children, Elizabeth and Bill, Jr.  They also have a dog, Ozzie.  

Bill's father and grandfather both worked at Wisconsin Steel Works on the East Side of Chicago.  After he served in the United States Army as a Combat Engineer in Vietnam, Bill followed in his father's footsteps and worked at Wisconsin Steel.  He then attended Illinois State University where he received a Bachelor's Degree, Thornton Community College (South Suburban College), and Governor's State University where he received a Master's Degree in Health Services Administration. 

Jeanne graduated from Purdue Calumet with a Bachelor's Degree in Education and Master's Degree in Education.  Jeanne is a middle school teacher at Schrum Middle School in Calumet City, IL.  Their children, Elizabeth and Bill, Jr. attended Edison Elementary School, Eggers Middle School and Bishop Noll Institute.  

Elizabeth attended the University of Notre Dame and earned a Bachelor's Degree in English and a Master's Degree in Education from Purdue Calumet.  Elizabeth is married to Rudy Gallegos and they have two children, Alex and Matthew.

Bill, Jr. attended Purdue University West Lafayette where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering and then attended law school at Loyola University Chicago School of Law.  Bill Jr. is married to Sara Stanzione-Emerson and they have a son, John and daughter, Elise.

Bill has worked in the healthcare industry improving systems and making hospitals more efficient.  He will use the skills he has learned in the private sector to help make the city more efficient.  He has also worked as a counselor serving at risk youth at Campagna Academy in Schererville, IN.  Bill now works as a Resource Officer with the School City of Hammond. 

In addition to Bill's service on the Hammond Planning Commission, Hammond Gaming Committee and Hammond Housing Task Force, he has also been elected Commander of Hammond American Legion Post 168, elected Precinct Committeeman, elected President of the Central Hammond Democratic Club, served as Delegate to the Indiana State Democratic Convention, and served as a member of the Domestic Relations Advisory Board and Lake County Drug Free Alliance.  He also has been appointed to the Solid Waste Management Board of Lake County.     

Bill has the diverse experience that is needed to address the difficult challenges the City of Hammond faces today.  Whether he is serving his country fighting at war or he is serving his community at home, Bill will always put the citizens first.
